Founder Leader of the People’s Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE), Uma Maheswaran was one of the militants who received training under the PLO. The LTTE terrorists were also trained in military training camps in Lebanon set up by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in late 1970s and early 1980s. The Indian intelligence services have different arms and sometimes one arm is not aware of the clandestine operations of the other arm. It is not clear whether it was a part of the RAW strategy to train Naxalites too, while giving weapons training to LTTE terrorists. The LTTE, while getting its cadres trained by Indian military experts, had clandestinely provided military trainers and mercenaries to Naxalites, obviously for huge payments.
In 2004 when the CPI (Maoist) was formed, Basava Raju was made the secretary of the central military commission. In 1992, he was elected as a member of the central committee of the erstwhile Communist Party of India Marxist-Leninist People’s War. The Intelligence Bureau report of 2011 said that in 1987, Basava Raju along with Ganapathy, Mallojoula Koteshwar Rao and Malla Raju Reddy among others underwent training by LTTE cadres in ambush tactics in the forests of Bastar. The National Investigation Agency had announced a reward of Indian Rs 1.5 million (SL Rs 3.75 million) for any information on Raju who is 67 years old. Interestingly, it was the era in which the Indian intelligence arm the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) had set up several training camps for LTTE cadres in Chennai, Dehra Doon and Gurgaon.īasava Raju became General Secretary of the CPI (Maoist) and has been part of the Naxal movement, which started in Naxalbari in the 1970s. They also made a sensational disclosure that Basava Raju alias Nambala Keshav Rao was trained by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in 1987. Security officials said that preliminary investigations into the Sukma attack suggested that Basava Raju, leader of the political front of the Naxalites CPI (Maoist) led the execution. Sukma is in the midst of the Naxalite belt running through Chhattisgarh, Bihar, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. On March 4, Sukma in Chhattisgarh witnessed yet another deadly attack on Indian Security Forces by Naxalite Maoists killing 22 Security personnel. Last week, the Indian media reported a shocking revelation that Sri Lankan Tamil Tigers had provided training to Naxalites, the dreaded militants who have been carrying out armed attacks on the Indian Security Forces and Police for more than half a century.
